BHC Participates in AIA Fundraising EventBHC gives back to Central Ohio familiesFor Immediate Release March 10, 2008 Columbus, Ohio For the third year in a row, Bird Houk Collaborative brought design ingenuity to bear at Canstruction® 2008. Sponsored by the local chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), this unique design/build competition benefits Operation Feed and the Mid-Ohio Food Bank. Local architects and engineers build giant sculptures made entirely of canned food. These structures, on display at Columbus College of Art and Design (CCAD) for one week, are deconstructed following the exhibition and are donated to local food banks, elderly centers, and day care facilities. This year's competition theme was 'Taking Shelter', based on the similarly titled exhibition running during the month of March at CCAD. The exhibition features works of art depicting economically marginalized and homeless populations. BHC's scupture, a giant crab, is faced with conditions similar to that of these populations. A crab, much like a homeless person, is constantly moving from place to place - seeking shelter. With each move he is faced with environmental challenges, but each new shell (shelter) he is one step closer to security. Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, BHC was able to purchase more than 3,500 cans for the competition. That’s approximately 3,000 meals for Central Ohio families! Additionally, we are proud to say that the BHC team won the award for "Best Meal". Congratulations to the BHC team and our generous sponsors for their contributions to ending hunger in our community.
