Old Hilliard Streetscape Dedication

Improvements to Main Street part of City's vision to attract visitors to historic downtown.

For Immediate Release

March 11, 2009

Hilliard, Ohio - The City of Hilliard celebrated the completion of the first phase of its downtown redevelopment with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on March 11, 2009.

The dedication and mayoral address took place under a newly-constructed arch on Main Street in Old Hilliard.

Members of the Hilliard community, City Council, Planning Commission, and the Design, Engineering, and Construction Team of Bird Houk Collaborative, EP Ferris & Associates, Ralph Curl Engineers, and Complete General Construction were on hand for the dedication.

In a public speech, Hilliard Mayor Donald Schonhardt explained that the Old Hilliard Streetscape Improvement Project is the first of many downtown enhancement projects intended to attract people to Old Hilliard. The City is also constructing two urban parks and relocating the Heritage Park Trailhead to Center Street in downtown.

The $3.4 million Old Hilliard Streetscape Improvement Project, which began three years ago, includes 2,500 linear feet of streetscape improvements to Main Street. Enhancements include new sidewalks, street trees, planter beds, decorative railings, benches, seat walls, and multiple arches designed to provide distinction and definition to the downtown.

Safety and infrastructure improvements are also part of the redevelopment package. New fire hydrants, storm sewers, street lighting, illuminated bollards, curb ramps, countdown pedestrian signals, and bump outs have been installed to define parking and slow traffic.

The Old Hilliard Streetscape Improvement Project was funded through a combination of Ohio Public Works Commission Grants, Community Development Block Grants, State Motor Vehicle Tax Funds, and City Funds.
